Yellow on the outside, white on the inside
The highlight of last weekend was seeing the Banana Boys on Sunday at the Factory theatre. It's a play about the life of Canadian-born Asian males.. the stereotypes, expectations, women-problems, etc. (It's got nothing to do with gays btw)
Sen first came across a review of it on the internet and asked me and a few other friends if we wanted to check it out. Eddie, who has always been into Asian Canadian culture, thought it would be interesting. We also talked Tristan into coming along as well!
Fast forward now to Sunday.. we walk into the theatre (a small old building at Bathurst & Adelaide) not knowing what to expect. The chairs were old and uncomfortable, and the stage was messy with loose paper scattered all over. A good portion of the audience looked like U of T Drama majors, totally different from the crowd we're used to seeing at UW. But when the play started, all focus was on nothing but the stage.
Over the next 2 and a half hours, we observed everything about the challanges faced by a typical Canadian-born Asian.. a subculture that has been ignored by every type of entertainment until now. The play was about 5 CBCs struggling with stereotypes, women, and career goals.. and what's funny is i know a good number of guys who can relate to at least one of these characters. Even myself... I'm the guy who drives around bitching about FOB drivers, or one of the guys who enjoys drinking his miseries away. Whats funny is there's a part of the play which takes place at the University of Waterloo, which is often an Asian parent's favorite place for their goody-good kids! But despite all these negative topics, the story has a happy ending as each character realizes what he really need to change about himself. For example, one of the guys decides he was wants to be a writer rather than a doctor (which is what his mother wanted).
